Perspective grids for drawing space

Construct one box with two vanishing points, then compare its planes and verticals. A small, verifiable construction is the starting point for more complex rooms and streets.

Box below eye level — an original DrawGrid two-point perspective diagram.

Look here: Both vanishing points sit on the same horizontal line.

Draw a horizon at y = 20 and place vanishing points at its left and right ends. The box is below this line, so its top is visible. Mark the nearest top corner at (50, 38).

The overlay uses the same frame coordinates as this reference. Switch each layer on to compare the indicated relationships.

All steps for reading and practice
  1. 1. Set eye level

Draw a horizon at y = 20 and place vanishing points at its left and right ends. The box is below this line, so its top is visible. Mark the nearest top corner at (50, 38).

Check: Do not raise one vanishing point to make an edge meet it.

  2. 2. Build the top plane

Connect the nearest top corner to both vanishing points. Choose left and right corners at (30, 30.8) and (75, 29). Send each to the opposite vanishing point; their intersection closes the top at (56.25, 26.75).

Check: Extend each receding edge: it must meet its own vanishing point.

  3. 3. Anchor the bottom

Place the nearest bottom corner at (50, 62). Send bottom rays to both vanishing points. Intersect them with verticals at x = 30 and x = 75 to obtain bottom corners (30, 45.2) and (75, 41).

Check: These are projected edges of one box, not equal screen-space heights.

  4. 4. Read the three planes

Turn off the guide and turn on Three box planes. Trace the light top, middle left and dark right as closed shapes. Check that the nearest seam is vertical and all corners join.

Check: Equal-depth floor divisions need a measuring construction; evenly spaced screen lines are not a perspective grid.

  5. 5. Verify the construction

Draw the box, then extend its six receding top and bottom edges with a ruler. Left-going edges should meet the left point and right-going edges the right point. Keep verticals parallel in this level two-point view.

Check: Finish when edges converge consistently and the top is visible below eye level.
